Waging Change

Check out two new documentary films
featuring our work - Waging Change,
created by Peabody award winning
documentary filmmaker Abby Ginzburg,
and The Great American Lie, created by
First Partner of California Jennifer Siebel
Newsom.

In partnership with
One Billion Rising / V-Day Coalition
and Artist Paul Leibow, we created
Elena the Essential Service Worker,
a 24 ft. art statue appearing in multiple
cities. She is Elena the Essential Voter,
Worker and American demanding
fair pay, respect, and fair elections.

Elena the Essential Worker

The New York Times recently exposed the exploitative and predatory practice of the National Restaurant Association, which requires restaurant workers to pay for their own work safety training. This egregious practice funds “the other NRA’s” lobbying efforts against workers.

Worker Stories

I was working as expediter and  as a server at a restaurant that had just opened before Covid-19 began. With the closing, they started doing take out and then finally limited outdoor seating. I was asked to come back but felt very uncomfortable as an immunocompromised person. I’m lucky enough that my management understood, however I am one of the 40% of people who do not qualify for unemployment and I have been struggling to get by.

I am a bartender in Manhattan who discovered One Fair Wage during the initial lockdown due to COVID-19 in March of 2020. Since then, One Fair Wage has been the one beacon of hope I have had throughout this entire pandemic. As someone who has worked in the service industry for almost ten years, it is such a relief to know there is an organization like One Fair Wage fighting for the rights of restaurant workers across America. I would like to start off by thanking you all for the work you did through the Emergency Coronavirus Relief Fund. I cannot express how much of a benefit that was for me and my coworkers during such a hard time.

My mom is an essential worker who got COVID while working. Shortly after, her company shut down and she had to find another job. During her search it was hard for her to find a company who offered health insurance and she has continued to struggle financially to make ends meet. I was a waitress, a busser, a runner, and a hostess for a couple of years and I know how hard it is to make ends meet when you are living off of tips. Demanding One Fair Wage for service workers and tipped professionals is something I am extremely passionate about and I won’t stop until everyone has a liveable wage.

Thank you. It’s been a financial struggle for some time, so you have no idea how much of a relief your generosity is to me. Thank You again One Fair Wage for your support.

One Fair Wage is a national coalition, campaign, and organization seeking to end all subminimum wages in the United States and increase the sustainability of wages and working conditions in the service sector. One Fair Wage policy would require all employers to pay the full minimum wage with fair, non-discriminatory tips on top, that would lift millions of tipped and subminimum wage workers nationally out of poverty.
